Mirabai Chanu and Commonwealth Games Weightlifting: Career, Category and How the Sport Is Scored

Weightlifting is one of the few Olympic sports where an Indian audience genuinely understands the stakes, and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is the reason why. At 6 Club we write background guides rather than live coverage, so this piece covers what is settled and verifiable: her documented career, how her weight category works, and how a weightlifting medal is actually decided. No predictions, no live numbers.
Who she is
Mirabai Chanu is from Manipur, and she came into weightlifting through the state's long tradition in the sport rather than through a national academy pipeline. The story that follows her around — carrying firewood as a child, being spotted for her strength — has been retold enough times to become a cliché, but the part that matters competitively is less romantic: she is a technically precise lifter in the lightest women's categories, where the margins between medals are frequently a single kilogram.
She has also had the career arc that separates good lifters from great ones. A no-lift at the Rio Olympics in 2016 could have ended her at international level. Instead she came back and won a world title the following year. Everything since has been built on that recovery.
Career honours — historical and verifiable
Every entry below is a completed, documented result. Nothing here relates to any ongoing competition, and no result from a current Games appears on this page.
Commonwealth Games, Glasgow
Silver medal on her Commonwealth Games debut in the 48kg category.
World Weightlifting Championships, Anaheim
World title in the 48kg class — the achievement that made her a household name in India.
Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast
Gold medal in the 48kg category.
Olympic Games, Tokyo
Olympic silver in the 49kg category at the Games staged in 2021.
Commonwealth Games, Birmingham
Gold medal in the 49kg category.
She has also been honoured domestically, including India's highest sporting award. For a fuller, citation-backed record, the Wikipedia biography of Mirabai Chanu is a reasonable starting point.
The two lifts, explained properly
Olympic-style weightlifting has exactly two lifts, and understanding the difference makes live coverage far more readable.
Snatch
Bar goes from the floor to overhead in one continuous movement. It is the more technical of the two, the more failure-prone, and the smaller of the two numbers. Because it comes first, a lifter who struggles in the snatch spends the rest of the session chasing.
Clean and jerk
Two movements: the bar comes to the shoulders, then overhead. Heavier weights move here, so the clean and jerk usually decides the medals. This is the phase where a lifter can make up a deficit — or lose a lead by going one kilogram too far.
Three attempts are allowed in each lift. The best successful attempt in each counts, and the two are added to give the total. Highest total wins. A lifter who fails all three attempts in either lift has no total at all and cannot be ranked — a bomb-out, and the single most brutal outcome in the sport.
Attempt order and why it is tactical
Lifters do not go one after another in a fixed rotation. The bar is loaded in ascending order of weight, and athletes declare the weight they want. That produces genuine tactics: declaring a heavier opener puts you later in the order and lets you see what rivals have done, but it removes the safety of a comfortable first lift. Coaches change declarations mid-session, sometimes twice, which is why the on-screen order shuffles.
When two lifters end on the same total, the standard tiebreak favours whoever reached that total first in the attempt order. Bodyweight has also served as a tiebreak under various rule sets, with the lighter athlete favoured — one reason weigh-in is taken seriously in the lightest classes.
Where weightlifting sits in Glasgow 2026
Glasgow 2026 runs a reduced ten-sport programme, and weightlifting and para powerlifting are both on it. That is not true of every sport people associate with the Commonwealth Games — hockey and squash, for instance, are not part of this edition at all. The full list and the reasoning behind reading the table correctly are in our guide to how the Commonwealth Games 2026 medal tally is ranked, and the sport-by-sport Indian view is in the Glasgow schedule guide for Indian viewers.
Practical note for watching from India: Glasgow session times are published in British Summer Time and IST is 4 hours 30 minutes ahead. A 15:00 BST weightlifting session starts at 19:30 IST. Start lists, attempt results and the official table are published through the Commonwealth Games Federation. If you want a workable refresh routine, our live-result tracking guide covers it.
While you wait for the session
A weightlifting group can run for well over an hour before the medal is settled. If you are filling the gap, 6 Club's Wingo rounds resolve in about a minute each, and you can learn the format without spending anything using the free colour prediction demo.
